World Traveling Educator: Dr. Mary Shuttleworth began traveling internationally at the young age of 15. Her work to bring human rights education to all ages includes more than 669,000 miles (1.1 million km), circling the globe 17 times, covering six continents and more than 90 nations. Almost all corners of our world.
Vision: She was born and raised in apartheid South Africa. Discrimination was the law and ruthlessly enforced. Unfortunately, to her dismay, she discovered that discrimination was almost everywhere. She felt compelled to help.
Mission: Educate! As an educator, she started a school then expanded community outreach by founding United for Human Rights (UHR) with its youth component, Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI), in 2001. Educate to reduce discrimination.
“The question is not what it would cost to teach human rights,
Dr. Mary Shuttleworth
but what it would cost not to.”
